Conical vs. Flat Burr Grinder What is the difference (2) ?

Last article we have discussed about the difference for the conical and flat burrs. In this article, I would like to show you more about the testing data, from the product, you can get more understanding for the difference between these two kinds of burr grinder, it would be a guide for you to choose and define what you really want.

Conical or Flat Grinder Which Produces More Waste?

After we observed and tested, it seems that the flat burr grinder doesn’t really understand the concept of waste, as well as the conical burr grinder does.
Due to the flat shape of the ring and the structure of the grinding system, some ground coffee will be trapped between the rings in the grinder, without falling all the way to the outside. And some are trapped on the edge between the chute and the burr. Because when the ground coffee is pushed sideways out of the burr set, there will be some ground left into the machine. These trapped grounds may become stale, depending on how regularly you clean the grinder. And it also makes cleaning a bit more tedious. This for sure may not seem like a huge deal at first. But the waste left behind from one batch may find itself contaminating or otherwise ruining another.

Tips: every time when you try to use the flat burr grinder, do not put the coffee beans into the machine first. You can first start the machine a few second, let it spin for a few second, the residue will be pushed out of the burr set.

A conical burr does not suffer from this problem because grounds flow straight down, the whole coffee beans are pulled down through the conical burrs at a slight angle, but the path is essentially vertical. This is because of the vertical set up of the conical burrs. Grinds drop directly into the chute with fewer retained grinds.

Another difference between the two burr types lies in the static charge that builds up with the flat burrs. This static will cause the finely ground power to become stuck to the sides of anything it touches especially the coffee collection boxes built into the grinder.

Which one should you choose? Well, if you’ve made it this far and you still aren’t sure which you prefer, our best advice would be choosing the grinder who can meet the point that you most concerned.
